Eating Carbs at Night Making You Fat?

So, does eating carbs after 6 pm hinder your weight loss? This is something that we have all grown up hearing and to be honest at one point before I did my research and examined exactly what carbs do and what they are, I also thought this to be true.

BUT I have some good news for you. It does not hinder your progress; you will not gain weight by eating carbs at night. Let me explain first how this little myth came to be.

So, for starters, when you eat carbs at night, you end up storing the water, glycogen, sodium all that stuff in your muscles and your body overnight. So, if you weigh the next day, the scale might say you gained some weight. but you did not gain 2,3,5,8lbs whatever it says overnight. Not possible sorry, that is not going to happen.

The second thing that happens and this is the most common and honestly, I feel like the biggest reason you have been trained to believe this, is because; what do you mostly snack on at night? Chips, cookies, popcorn, ice cream, a slice of cake on the couch, or my favorite a bowl of cereal before bed. Well, we tend to correlate those late-night snacks with gaining weight and we automatically assume. *ding ding ding*. I must be gaining weight because I am eating carbs at night! No, just NO! You are gaining weight because you are making bad choices with your carbs no matter what time of day you are eating them. You are gaining weight because you are consuming an extra 500 calories at night in "bedtime snacks" before you go to bed. It has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that they are carbs.

See the point I am trying to make here is that it isn't the time of day you are eating, it is what you are choosing to eat at that time. So, by the definition having rice with dinner after 6 pm is not going to cause you to gain weight. Having more carbs or more anything for that matter, but I will stay on track with carbs right now. So, more carbs, extra that your body does not need is going to cause you to gain weight.
If your schedule only allows for you to eat dinner with your loved ones after 6 pm, please do it. Not only do it but enjoy it knowing confidently that this meal is not going to hinder any goals you are working on. Now that is only true if you have been staying on track all day long. Because remember eating too much of any macronutrient or calories will hinder any weight loss goals you have.

So the bottom line is a calorie deficit wins for weight loss, and although I recommend having enough of each macronutrient. It is about calories in vs calories out. Carbs alone will not make you gain weight, too many will.
Stop making carbs the enemy. They do not make you fat, the kinds we chose to eat and the quantities we chose is what hinders any weight loss goals we may have. And sidebar if you are trying to put on muscle you need more than protein, you need CARBS!

Carbs fuel not only your body but your brain!
Carbs are pretty delicious!
Hope this helps put your mind at ease a little and enjoy your carb-full life.
